Step outside and into the story of the landscape in this fun, nature-filled botany adventure! In this introduction to local botany, you’ll explore Big Rapids’ parks through three guided field trips, discovering how to identify plants, understand plant structure, and use a plant key right in the field. Along the way, we’ll dig into ecology and uncover how local vegetation connects to both natural systems and human history.
Each outing invites you to slow down and look closer as we investigate diverse habitats together. Walks are designed to be relaxed and accessible, generally on level ground with some hills or stairs, covering about one to two miles at a leisurely pace.
Come prepared to enjoy the outdoors! Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes, and consider bringing a hat, bug spray, and sunscreen. A pen, notebook, and plant field guide (if you have one) are welcome but not required. A cell phone or camera may also come in handy for capturing your discoveries.
