Accessibility & Infrastructure Modernization Project

Artworks is working to create a more user-friendly, community forward environment. An environment where everyone can experience the arts and humanities without barriers. Through accessible technology, inclusive programming, and welcoming spaces, we are removing obstacles to participation. As part of this commitment, our Accessibility & Infrastructure Modernization Project is upgrading the audio and visual systems throughout our building to enhance every visitor's experience.

Whether attending an exhibition opening, artist talk, community presentation, or workshop, our guests deserve to connect and participate fully. Much of our previous audio equipment was more than 15 years old and no longer met the needs of today's audiences. These upgrades provide clearer sound, support compatibility with modern assistive listening technology, and lay the foundation for expanded accessibility and future digital programming.

As of summer 2026, we're proud to celebrate a major milestone: the first phase of our main-level audio system is now fully operational. For the first time, a unified audio system serves Batdorff Gallery, strengthening our ability to better host exhibitions, lectures, performances, and community events through accessible technology, inclusive programming, and welcoming spaces. Though much of this work happens behind the scenes, the impact is felt by everyone who walks through our doors.

We’re not stopping there. Future phases will continue expanding accessibility features, enhancing audio and visual capabilities, and ensuring Artworks remains a vibrant cultural destination for Big Rapids and beyond.
