He taught ceramics at the high school level for 4 years in Michigan and Wisconsin, before moving back to Michigan to be the Marketing Director at Cran-Hill Ranch. Jesse loves teaching people of all ages, and sharing his passion for clay. When he is not teaching, he enjoys getting his hands dirty! Willful Women: A Tribute to the Artist While much has changed over the centuries of women creating art, today there are still disturbing trends. Male artists are more likely to have representation in commercial galleries, achieve higher prices in the art market, and are more likely to be written about by critics and art historians. The difference in price for women’s art is not insignificant. In a 2018 interview on NPR Renee Adams, a social science researcher of this phenomenon, claimed that female artists sell at a discount of 42.1 percent. She and colleagues conducted research showing computer-generated, genderless pieces of art to buyers. They told the buyers that the paintings were by males or females. Her findings: affluent people who visit art galleries, especially men, rate art as less compelling when it is said to be painted by a woman. The disparity between genders is historic, and while progress has been made, there is still work to be done. Nonetheless, against these odds, many women have succeeded, pushed boundaries, beaten the odds, defied convention, and exerted their will. THE CALL: For this exhibit, we want to pay tribute to women artists who defied convention and overcame obstacles to become respected and successful in this male-dominated arena. We have selected 22 impactful artists (see list below) and we invite you to take inspiration from their work. We ask you to create a piece that pays tribute to one of the artists. The tribute can be in relation to their subject matter or to their style. We have provided one sample for each artist; however, feel free to explore their other works. Any medium is welcome. When we exhibit your piece, we will want a copy of the piece that inspired you to include as a reference point for viewers. A judge will award first and second prizes, and there will be a People’s Choice award as well. The winners will be announced at the opening on July 9.
